Mammals

Royalston has a number of mammals that are endemic to the Eastern Cape as well as a number that are typically not found in this area. Here is a list of the mammals that have been seen, caught on Trail Cameras or spoor identified. We have included minimal information, if you wish to learn more about the mammals please consult mammal books, google etc. We will attempt to use photos taken on Royalston by residents.

Here is a link to a PDF showing spoor for each animal. Feel free to download this and take it with you the next time you walk a trail. Try and identify the animal by its spoor. Take note that the hooved mammals are very similar, so the size is important. Remember spoor on soft sand tends to look bigger than it really is. Take along a measuring device to get the size. Taking a photo with something that you know the size of is also a good way to identify at a later stage. A great idea is to measure the size of your shoe and place your shoe next to the spoor. To identify which way the animal was moving, look at the spoor guide, the top of the illustration is the front of the spoor.
